Buying a Car in Ibiza: What You Need to Know
Buying a car in Ibiza? Strap in, amigos, it's a ride. The island might be famous for sunsets, beach bars, and late-night adventures, but the second-hand car market? That’s where things get really interesting. Or should we say… entertaining? Infuriating? Soul-destroying? Take your pick.
We’ve been around the block—a whole lotta blocks—and trust us, Ibiza does things its own way when it comes to cars. Sun-faded dashboards, interiors that have seen one too many summers, and sellers asking new-car money for bashed-up jalopies that should’ve retired years ago. It’s all part of the fun! Or the headache. Depends on your mood.
Hey, we love life here and wouldn’t trade it for the world. (Well… maybe during peak season, but that’s another story.) But when it comes to buying a car? We don’t mince our words. Here’s what you need to know.

First things first: Ibiza is an island. Think I'm stating the obvious? We once had someone ask us the way to the bridge back to the mainland! I kid you not. You would be amazed by the number of people that do not quite get that not only is Ibiza an island, but it is an island a considerable distance from mainland Spain. I've crossed a few bridges in my time, even mended a few, but an 80-mile bridge? That'd take some doing.
My point? Cars don’t magically appear here. Every car here has been or will be shipped in, and shipping takes time, money, and effort. The result? Fewer cars on the market and way more people who need them, especially once the summer season kicks off. When demand outstrips supply, prices rocket. Even for cars that have, quite frankly, seen better days.
Sun & Salt: The Island’s Brutal Impact on Cars
Ibiza’s beauty is legendary, but she’s hard on your motor. The blazing sun fades paintwork and cracks and lifts dashboards. The salty air? That’s a one-way ticket to rust town. Interiors melt, plastics go brittle, and don’t even get us started on the windscreen wipers. Yet, despite all that, you’ll still find sellers asking eye-watering prices. Apparently, a bit of sun damage adds character these days.
The ‘Bumper-to-Fit’ Mentality
I've said it before and I'll say it again: driving in Ibiza can sometimes feel like you've been dropped into Wacky Races or Mario Kart. Summer is particularly crazy, and it's not unusual to arrive home by the seat of your pants after surviving a couple of near-death experiences. Here in Ibiza, parking can get… creative. If you’ve ever watched someone shimmy their car into a space with the help of a few strategic nudges, you’ll know exactly what we mean.
Strategic? Who are we kidding? Quite often, they have absolutely no shame in whacking your car out of the way to squeeze themselves in! And if you mention it? That's what your bumper's for, you fool! Scuffed bumpers? Expected. Scratches, cracked corners, mystery dents? All par for the course. Locals barely notice (of course they don't), but for buyers used to showroom condition, it can be a bit of a culture shock (and frankly a little insulting) when they've advertised the car as being in 'perfect condition'.
Mileage? Who’s Counting…
It’s not unusual to see cars here with over 200,000 km on the clock, regularly pushing 250,000, and not unusually 300,000. Yet sellers will still cheerfully tell you, “It’ll go forever.” Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t. Not their problem once you've bought it. Either way, don’t expect the asking price to reflect the mileage. That’s island life for you.
‘What Ya Gonna Do?’: The Ibiza Seller Attitude
If you’ve ever tried to haggle down the price of a car here after pointing out a dent the size of a beach ball and a massive gouge down the side, you’ll know the look. The squint. The shrug. The “Whaaat? What are you talking about? It’s nothing.” Cue much gaslighting about the state of the car you are clearly imagining. Welcome to the Ibiza second-hand market.
Cars with practically bald tyres, rust creeping along the edges, interiors that have seen one too many summers, or you know, actual plant life growing inside of them, and yet, the price tag? Practically what they paid new. It's become a bit of a game now for us. We love to look at a listing and see how wild the difference can be between the description and the photos. Like "only light damage to bodywork for its age," and the picture of the car has the airbags blown and the body caved in. "Bull Bingo," for want of a better term!
It all boils down to this: “What ya gonna do?” If you want to buy local, these are your choices. Or…
Buying Smart: When the Mainland Makes Sense
We love Ibiza. She's a funny old bird. But when it comes to buying a car, even a higher-value car? Sometimes, the mainland just makes sense. We’ve seen it time and time again: people save thousands buying in mainland Spain. More stock, more competition, and prices that feel a bit more grounded. (Even buying from a dealer—now that's saying something!)
Yes, it means a ferry trip. Yes, there’s paperwork. But for the right car (especially something high-end), it’s often worth the effort. Just make a little adventure out of it! But if you're buying local? Go in with your eyes wide open. Get the car checked by a decent mechanic. Don’t be afraid to haggle, but manage your expectations; the right car does pop up.
The Importance of Research
Before making a purchase, do your homework. Research the market prices for the type of vehicle you want. Check online listings, visit local dealerships, and talk to other buyers. Knowledge is power, especially in a market as unpredictable as Ibiza's.
Negotiating Tactics
When you find a car you like, be prepared to negotiate. Start by pointing out any flaws or issues you’ve noticed. Use these as leverage to bring the price down. Remember, the seller expects some back-and-forth. It’s part of the game.
Final Thoughts
Ibiza life is laid-back, sun-soaked, and full of charm—and so is its car market. If you love the convenience of buying local and you’ve got a good sense of humour, you’ll be just fine. If you want choice and value, the mainland may be calling.
Either way, do your homework, and happy car hunting. And hey, if you need a hand or a bit of island-savvy advice, like Finding a Mechanic in Ibiza, read our blog post. You know where we are.
